The Memphis exhibit in the Negro Building at the 1895 Cotton States and International Exposition in Atlanta is the focus of this view, which shows one of the displays set up by different cities and states inside the building. The exposition opened in September 1895, and Booker T. Washington gave his well-known address there that month. The Negro Building was among the exposition's most visited spaces and was meant to show the progress of Black Americans in education, industry, and the arts, with exhibits from across the South and beyond. The photograph is dated 1896 in its record, a year after the fair opened.
