This stereograph shows the inside of the Negro Building at the Cotton States and International Exposition in Atlanta, a fair that ran in 1895 and is recorded here with an 1896 date. The building held exhibits meant to display African American education, craftsmanship and economic progress, and it stood apart from the main exhibition halls in a segregated South. Booker T. Washington spoke at the exposition's opening that fall, and the fair as a whole drew national attention to Atlanta. The interior view offers a rare glimpse of how the displays were arranged.
