Few views of the 1895 Cotton States and International Exposition in Atlanta show the inside of its Negro Building, a separate exhibit hall devoted to the achievements of African Americans in education, the arts, and industry. The exposition opened in September 1895, when Booker T. Washington gave the speech now known as the Atlanta Compromise address. This stereograph, issued in 1896, lets viewers see the displays up close and gives a sense of how the fair presented Black progress to its visitors, a presentation shaped by the segregation of the period.
