This view shows the New York State Building at the Cotton States and International Exposition, which opened in Atlanta in September 1895. The fair was meant to showcase the recovering economy of the New South, especially cotton and manufacturing, and several northern states built their own pavilions to take part. The photograph's caption credits R.A. Ellis as the copyright holder and lists the image as number 4 in a series, though the date and details come from an older caption card. The exposition is also remembered as the setting for Booker T. Washington's "Atlanta Compromise" address.
