The car shed at Atlanta's passenger station appears here as a skeleton of bare timbers and collapsed roofing. The city's rail lines made it a key target during the Atlanta Campaign, and Union forces held the city from early September 1864. Before marching toward Savannah in mid-November, Sherman's troops burned depots, warehouses and factories to deny their use to the Confederacy, and this view records the aftermath. Stereograph cards like this one were viewed through a special lens, which gave viewers at home a three-dimensional look at the destruction.
