A drawbridge and foreign visitors give this drawing its particular focus, a pairing that points to the period after Japan reopened to Western contact in the 1850s. The catalog credits Isoda Koryūsai, an Edo-period artist active from about the 1760s to the 1780s and known for refined urban scenes and woodblock prints. The record's dates do not agree with each other, however. It lists 1750 as the drawing's date but places the subject in Tokyo between 1850 and 1900, so viewers should weigh those dates carefully before placing the scene in time.
