A drawbridge in Tokyo, with foreign visitors in the picture, is the detail that sets this drawing apart. The record's subject headings place it between 1850 and 1900, a period when Japan opened its ports to foreign trade and diplomats, merchants, and tourists began arriving in the capital, then called Edo until 1868. The record attributes the work to Isoda Koryūsai, who was active from 1764 to 1788, which does not match the 1750 date given, so the timing is worth checking against other sources. Drawbridges of this kind were familiar features of the city's canals and castle moats.
