A drawbridge in Tokyo and a group of foreign visitors are the details this record singles out. The date of 1750 conflicts with the artist's listed working years, 1764 to 1788, and the 1850 to 1900 subject range falls after his career, so the dating is best read as approximate. Koryūsai was an Edo-period ukiyo-e artist known for elegant figure studies and scenes of town life, and his city views often include canals and bridges. Interest in foreign visitors grew after Japan reopened to outside contact in the 1850s, which gives the subject its historical weight.
