The subject headings name a drawbridge in Tokyo and the foreign visitors who came to see it, which sets this sheet apart from the more familiar Edo-period views. The catalog gives a date of 1750, but it credits Isoda Koryūsai, who is recorded as working between 1764 and 1788, and the subjects point to the decades from 1850 to 1900. That mismatch is worth keeping in mind. Koryūsai was a master of ukiyo-e in the Edo period, while the later subject dates suggest the drawing may reflect Tokyo in the Meiji era, when foreigners were arriving in growing numbers after Japan opened its ports in the 1850s.
