This drawing is catalogued under the subject of a drawbridge in Tokyo with foreign visitors, a scene tied to the later 19th century, when Japan was opening to Western travelers and Edo was becoming Tokyo. The record gives 1750 as the date, but it credits Isoda Koryūsai, an Edo-period artist active roughly from 1764 to 1788, so the date is best read as approximate. Koryūsai is known for woodblock prints of courtesans, actors and daily life in the city. Since this is a drawing rather than a print, its lines and wash show the hand of the artist more directly than a printed copy would.
