The record's subject headings single out a drawbridge in Tokyo and the foreign visitors who came to see it, a scene more often associated with the late nineteenth century than with the artist's own period. The record credits Isoda Koryūsai, an Edo-based ukiyo-e artist whose recorded working years run from 1764 to 1788, but it also gives a date of 1750, which falls earlier than those years, so the dating deserves caution. The subject headings place the scene between 1850 and 1900, when Japan opened its ports to Western trade and Edo, renamed Tokyo in 1868, drew growing numbers of foreign travelers. The drawing is held in the David Murray Collection of Japanese prints and drawings at the Library of Congress.
