A drawbridge over a Tokyo waterway, along with foreign visitors crossing it, sets this drawing apart, and the catalog dates that subject to 1850 to 1900. Those decades spanned the end of the Edo shogunate, the opening of Japanese ports to Western traders, and the Meiji-era rebuilding of the capital, when foreign travelers were drawn to scenes like this. The record gives 1750 as the date, yet names Isoda Koryūsai, who worked between 1764 and 1788, so the dating deserves a careful reading.
