Few pictures on this board name a specific structure as plainly as this one, which is catalogued around a drawbridge in Tokyo, a city called Edo until 1868. The record ties it to foreign visitors to Japan between 1850 and 1900, a period when Western travelers, diplomats and traders arrived after the country opened its ports in the 1850s. The attribution to Isoda Koryūsai, an Edo-based ukiyo-e artist active from 1764 to 1788, sits uneasily with the 1750 date given here, so the timing is worth checking against the Library of Congress catalog. Drawbridges were a familiar feature of the city's castle approaches and canals, which makes them a useful clue to how Edo looked to those who came to see it.
