A drawbridge in Tokyo and the foreign visitors named in its catalog headings set this drawing apart from the artist's better-known prints of beauties and landscapes. Isoda Koryūsai worked in Edo, the city now called Tokyo, during the Tokugawa period, and his recorded working years run from 1764 to 1788. The subject headings place the scene between 1850 and 1900, well after his career, so the 1750 date on the record should be treated with caution. Foreign travelers to Japan in the later nineteenth century often recorded city views like this one, which makes the sheet useful for seeing how outsiders saw the capital.
