The drawbridge and the foreign visitors named in the record give this drawing its particular focus, a subject that is less common than the street scenes and landscapes usually found in Japanese prints. The record credits Isoda Koryūsai, an Edo-period painter and printmaker active from about 1764 to 1788, but dates the drawing to 1750 and places its subject in Tokyo between 1850 and 1900, so the dating should be read with caution. The later range fits a period after Edo was renamed Tokyo in 1868, when Western travelers were increasingly visible in the city and became a recurring theme in Japanese pictures. Its place in the David Murray Collection at the Library of Congress makes it a useful record of that cross-cultural moment.
