This drawing is set on a drawbridge in Tokyo, a crossing of the kind that guarded the moats and castle approaches of the city, and its catalog subject lists foreign visitors among the figures. The catalog dates it to 1750, but it credits the artist Isoda Koryūsai, who was active from about 1764 to 1788, and assigns the subjects to 1850 to 1900. Because the period described in the subject headings was one of rapid change after Japan opened to foreign trade, the scene likely records that encounter between travelers and the city. The mismatch in dates is worth keeping in mind for anyone researching the sheet.
