This drawing shows a drawbridge in Tokyo, a subject the record ties to the late nineteenth century, when foreign visitors were arriving in the city after Japan opened its ports in the 1850s. Bridges like these, often spanning the moats around the old castle grounds, were common landmarks of the former shogunal capital, Edo, which became Tokyo in 1868. The record credits Isoda Koryūsai, an ukiyo-e artist known mainly for prints and paintings from the 1760s to the 1780s. Its date of 1750 does not match that career, so the dating should be treated with caution.
