A drawbridge in Tokyo and the foreign visitors who came to see it set this drawing apart from the artist's better-known prints of women and theater scenes. The city was called Edo until 1868, when the Meiji government made it the capital and began opening Japan to Western travelers, so the bridges and gates around the old castle grounds became a familiar sight for newcomers. The recorded date of 1750 falls before the artist's known working years of 1764 to 1788, so the dating and attribution are worth checking against other sources.
