This sheet takes its subjects from the record: a drawbridge in Tokyo and foreign visitors to the city. The catalog places the scene between 1850 and 1900, a span that covers the opening of Japan to foreign trade and the early Meiji years, when Western travelers became a more common sight in the capital. The record credits Isoda Koryūsai, a painter active from 1764 to 1788 who was known for scenes of Edo life, but it also gives a date of 1750, which predates that career. Researchers should treat both the attribution and the date as unsettled.
