Drawbridges and the foreign visitors who came to see them are the two subjects catalogued for this Tokyo drawing, which places it in the decades after Japan opened its ports to outside trade. The record gives a date of 1750, but it credits Isoda Koryūsai, who worked roughly from 1764 to 1788, so the subject dates are the more reliable guide. Views of bridges and moats were a familiar theme in Japanese pictures of the capital, and foreign visitors appearing in such a scene would have marked a notable change in city life.
