A drawbridge in Tokyo and a group of foreign visitors are the subjects that set this drawing apart. The record dates it to 1750, yet it credits Isoda Koryūsai, who is listed as working between 1764 and 1788, so the date is likely approximate. Koryūsai was an Edo-period master of ukiyo-e, the woodblock tradition of urban life and popular pleasures. The subject dates of 1850 to 1900 point to the years after Japan opened its ports to Western trade, when foreign visitors became a more common sight in the capital, then renamed Tokyo in 1868.
