Unlike the woodblock prints around it, this is a single drawing, and its catalog entry pulls in two different periods. The artist is listed as Isoda Koryūsai, who was active in Edo from about 1764 to 1788, yet the date given is 1750, so that figure should be read with caution. The subjects, drawbridges in Tokyo and foreign visitors, point instead to the late nineteenth century, after Japan had reopened to Western trade and Edo had been renamed Tokyo in 1868.
