A drawbridge in Tokyo and the foreign visitors who came to see it are the subjects this drawing is catalogued under. The record credits Isoda Koryūsai, an Edo-period artist recorded as active from 1764 to 1788 and best known for ukiyo-e prints, but it gives a date of 1750 and subject dates of 1850 to 1900, which do not agree with one another. Tokyo was the name Edo took in 1868, when foreign travelers and residents became a more common sight in the city, so the later subject dates may describe the scene while the drawing's origin remains unsettled.
