This color woodcut honors Saigyō, the twelfth-century Buddhist monk and poet who left a warrior's life behind to wander Japan and write waka verse. His journeys and his poems about nature, travel, and solitude made him one of the most admired figures in Japanese culture, and later artists returned to him again and again. The record credits the engraving to Matsushima Seikichi, whose work in the carving stage was essential to turning a painter's design into a printed image. The print is part of the Library of Congress's Japanese prints and drawings holdings, and it is worth looking at for the way its line and color shape the figure's quiet, contemplative presence.
