Saigyō, the twelfth-century warrior who left his post to become a wandering Buddhist monk, is the figure this woodcut depicts, and his life gives the image its meaning. He is best remembered as a poet, especially for verses about cherry blossoms, the moon, and the solitude of travel, and later artists returned to him again and again as a model of the retired poet-pilgrim. The record credits Matsushima Seikichi as engraver and dates the print to 1750, a time when Japanese color woodcuts were still produced with a more limited palette than the full-color prints that came later in the century.
