Few figures in Japanese art are as recognizable as Saigyō, the poet-monk who left a warrior's career in his twenties to wander the country writing waka. This color woodcut presents him as a traveling priest, a subject artists returned to often because his poems on blossoms, the moon, and solitude offered easy visual shorthand. The print is credited to the engraver Matsushima Seikichi and dates to about 1750, when color printing was still developing and many sheets used only a few pigments alongside black ink.
