The figure here is Saigyō, the twelfth-century poet who left a career as a warrior in the service of the retired emperor to become a Buddhist monk and wanderer. Edo-period artists returned often to his story, since his journeys and nature poetry made him one of the most admired figures in Japanese culture. This color woodcut is credited to the engraver Matsushima Seikichi and dated 1750, placing it in the mid-eighteenth century, when Edo printmaking was flourishing. The record also lists the subject under priests of a later period, a reminder that catalog headings do not always match the date of the image.
