A color woodcut by the engraver Matsushima Seikichi, this sheet depicts Saigyō, the poet-monk who lived from 1118 to 1190 and left his post as a warrior in the imperial guard to take Buddhist vows. He became one of Japan's most admired waka poets, and his journeys through the mountains and provinces made him a favorite subject for later artists. The record dates the print to 1750, but its subject tags also mention priests from 1800 to 1870, so the date is worth checking against the Library of Congress entry.
