This woodcut shows Saigyō, the Buddhist monk and waka poet who lived from 1118 to 1190 and spent much of his life traveling on foot through the provinces. He left the warrior class to take up religious life, and his poems about mountains, moon, and blossoms made him one of the most admired figures in Japanese literature. The print is dated 1750, in the middle of the Edo period, when color woodblock printing was flourishing and artists often turned to famous poets and historical figures as subjects. The record credits Matsushima Seikichi as engraver, and the subject headings also note priests of a later period, so the print may reflect how Saigyō's image was remembered and retold in the eighteenth century.
