The figure here is Saigyō (1118–1190), a former warrior who left his household to become a Buddhist monk and then one of Japan's most admired waka poets. He spent much of his life traveling on foot, and his poems on the moon, blossoms, and the road made him a favorite subject for later artists. This woodcut in color, credited to the engraver Matsushima Seikichi and dated 1750, falls in the Edo period, when printmakers produced such religious and literary subjects for a broad urban audience. The record places it among the Library of Congress's Japanese prints and drawings.
