This woodcut shows Saigyō, the poet who left a warrior's life around 1140 to become a Buddhist monk and spent much of his remaining years traveling across Japan. Known for waka poems on nature, travel and impermanence, he was later often pictured as a wandering recluse. The print is credited to the engraver Matsushima Seikichi and dated 1750, a period when color woodblock prints flourished in Edo and famous poets and priests were popular subjects. The record gives no separate title, so the identification rests on its subject heading.
