The subject of this print is Saigyō, the twelfth-century poet and Buddhist monk who left a warrior's life to wander Japan writing waka verse about nature and impermanence. Color woodcuts like this one, cut from carved blocks, often presented religious and literary figures to viewers who already knew their poems and legends. The record dates the work to 1750 and credits Matsushima Seikichi as engraver, but its subject headings also mention priests from 1800 to 1870, so the date is worth checking against the original.
