Few figures in Japanese poetry are as widely remembered as Saigyō, the twelfth-century warrior who left his service to become a Buddhist monk and wander the country writing waka verse. This color woodcut, dated 1750 and cut by the engraver Matsushima Seikichi, depicts him as a religious figure, a choice that reflects how Edo-period printmakers drew on older literary and religious personalities. Saigyō's journeys and his poems about cherry blossoms and the moon made him a favorite subject for later artists, and the print shows how his image had become a recognizable type by the mid-eighteenth century.
