This color woodcut depicts Saigyō (1118–1190), a Buddhist monk and waka poet who left a samurai career to wander Japan and write verse about nature, travel, and the impermanence of life. Saigyō became one of the most admired figures in Japanese literature and art, and later artists often returned to his image. The print, dated 1750 and cut by the engraver Matsushima Seikichi, reflects the Edo-period woodblock tradition, in which printmakers translated literary and religious subjects into widely circulated images.
