This color woodcut centers on Saigyō (1118-1190), a warrior-turned-Buddhist monk best known for his waka poetry on travel, nature, and impermanence. The print is credited to the engraver Matsushima Seikichi and dated 1750, a time when Japanese artists were producing color woodblock images of historical and literary figures for a growing urban audience. Each hue in a color woodcut required its own carved block, so the finished sheet reflects close coordination between carver and printer.
