Saigyō, the twelfth-century poet and Buddhist monk who left a warrior's life behind to wander as a priest, is the figure at the center of this color woodcut. His verses on the moon, blossoms, and the road were admired for centuries, and he became one of the most frequently depicted figures in Japanese art. The print is credited to the engraver Matsushima Seikichi and dated 1750, in the Edo period, when woodblock printing flourished in cities such as Edo. Its record places it among the Library of Congress's Japanese prints and drawings.
