This woodcut takes its subject from Saigyō (1118-1190), a former warrior who left military service to become a Buddhist monk and wandered the provinces writing waka poetry. His verses on cherry blossoms, the moon, and the solitary life of a traveling priest made him one of the most admired poets in Japanese literary history, and he later became a favored figure for artists. The print is dated 1750 and credited to the engraver Matsushima Seikichi, so it reflects the mid-Edo period, when woodblock printing was flourishing in cities like Edo. Its color and carved line show the craft of that era, and the record's sparse details leave room to look closely at the figure's robes and setting.
