A color woodcut of Saigyō, the twelfth-century poet who left a samurai career to become a Buddhist monk, sets this print apart from the other pictures on the board that share its subject. Saigyō (1118-1190) is remembered for waka poems on nature, travel and impermanence, and his wandering life made him a favorite figure in Japanese art for centuries. The print is credited to the engraver Matsushima Seikichi and dated 1750, a period when Edo-era woodblock printing was flourishing. Its records place it within the Library of Congress's Japanese prints and drawings collection.
