A color woodcut of Saigyō, the poet-monk whose dates are given in the record as 1118 to 1190, makes this print a portrait of a religious figure rather than a scene of everyday life. Saigyō left his position as a warrior at court to become a Buddhist monk and spent much of his life traveling, writing waka poems about nature, travel, and solitude. His wandering, devout figure became a favorite subject in later Japanese art. The record dates the print to 1750 and credits the engraving to Matsushima Seikichi, so the image reflects how an 18th-century printmaker pictured a poet who had lived more than five centuries earlier.
