The figure this print depicts is Saigyō (1118–1190), a poet who left a samurai career in his early twenties to live as a Buddhist monk. He wandered across Japan and wrote waka poetry about nature, travel, and solitude, and he became one of the most admired poets of the medieval period. Records for this print list it as a color woodcut from 1750, made by the engraver Matsushima Seikichi, during the Edo period, when Saigyō's life and verse were popular subjects for artists. The date falls several centuries after the poet's death, so the image reflects how later Japanese audiences remembered him.
