A color woodcut of Saigyō, the twelfth-century warrior who became a Buddhist monk and celebrated waka poet, is credited in its record to the engraver Matsushima Seikichi. Saigyō, who lived from 1118 to 1190, was admired for poems on the moon, cherry blossoms, and the solitary life of travel and retreat, so Edo-period artists often returned to him as a subject. The record dates the print to 1750, a time when woodblock printing in Japan was well established and color was built up block by block from carved cherrywood. The print belongs to the Library of Congress's Japanese prints and drawings collection.
