A former warrior who became a Buddhist monk and waka poet is the subject of this 1750 woodcut. Saigyō (1118–1190) is remembered for his nature poems and his long journeys on foot across Japan, themes that later artists returned to often. The record credits the engraver Matsushima Seikichi. The date falls before the full multicolor printing that arrived in the 1760s, so the palette is limited, which is worth noticing when comparing it with later prints.
