This woodcut shows Saigyō, the twelfth-century monk and poet who left a warrior's life in his twenties to take Buddhist vows and wander Japan. His waka, collected in imperial anthologies, celebrated cherry blossoms, the moon, and the solitary journey, so later artists often returned to him as a figure of quiet devotion. The print is dated 1750, a period when color woodblock printing flourished in Edo and such images circulated widely among townspeople. The record credits the engraver Matsushima Seikichi, and the print's color and carving are worth examining for how they render a religious figure through the conventions of popular printmaking.
