This woodcut in color, dated 1750 in its record, portrays Saigyō, the twelfth-century warrior who became a Buddhist monk and one of the most admired waka poets in Japanese literature. He left his post as a samurai in his twenties and spent much of his life traveling on foot, and his poems about the moon, blossoms, and solitude made him a favorite subject for later artists. The record credits the engraver Matsushima Seikichi, and it notes that the sheet belongs to the Library of Congress's collection of Japanese prints and drawings.
