A color woodcut of the poet-monk Saigyō, who lived from 1118 to 1190, is the subject here, and the record credits the engraver Matsushima Seikichi. Saigyō left a samurai's life to take Buddhist vows and spent years traveling Japan while writing waka poems about the moon, blossoms, and the road. Later artists returned to him as the model of the wandering recluse, so this sheet draws on a reputation built over centuries. Dated 1750, it belongs to the mid-Edo period, when woodblock prints of poets and famous figures were popular.
