This woodcut shows Saigyō, the poet and Buddhist monk who lived from 1118 to 1190 and who left a court career to wander Japan and write waka poetry about nature and solitude. Later artists often drew him as a traveler with a staff and a sedge hat, so his image became a familiar subject in Japanese prints. The library's record gives the engraver as Matsushima Seikichi and the date as 1750, but a catalog note records that Kita considers the print a fake, so the attribution and date should be read with caution. The subject tags also point to priests of the 1800 to 1870 period, which suggests the image may reflect later tastes.
