Saigyō, the twelfth-century warrior who left military service to become a Buddhist monk and later one of Japan's most admired poets, is the figure named in this color woodcut. Edo-period artists often returned to such religious wanderers and famous poets, and this print, catalogued with a date of 1750, reflects that interest in old literary and religious stories. The engraving is credited to Matsushima Seikichi, who cut the woodblocks. Prints like this were made in multiples, so they carried tales of classical poetry and monastic life into ordinary homes.
