The subject of this print is Saigyō, the twelfth-century poet-monk named in its subject headings. He left his post as a warrior in the service of the imperial court in his early twenties to take Buddhist vows, then spent much of his life traveling the provinces and writing waka poems on travel, nature, and solitude. His verses were later included in imperial anthologies, and he became one of the most admired figures in Japanese literary and religious memory. Prints like this one, dated 1750, were made in the Edo period, when engravers such as Matsushima Seikichi cut the woodblocks that produced color images for a broad urban audience.
