Saigyō, the poet and Buddhist monk who lived from 1118 to 1190, is the figure named in this print's record. He left a career as a warrior-retainer in his early twenties to take religious vows and spent much of his life traveling, and his waka poems on the moon, blossoms, and solitude became some of the most admired in Japanese literature. This color woodcut, credited to the engraver Matsushima Seikichi and dated 1750, comes from a period when Edo-era printmakers were refining multi-block color printing. The record offers little beyond the subject and date, so the work is best read as an image of a legendary poet from the Heian and Kamakura eras, made centuries after his death.
