This woodcut turns to Saigyō, the twelfth-century poet who left a samurai's life to become a wandering Buddhist monk, and whose verses on blossoms and the moon made him one of Japan's most admired literary figures. The record dates the print to 1750 and credits Matsushima Seikichi as engraver, with color applied from separate woodblocks. Images of revered poets and priests like Saigyō were popular in Japanese art, valued for their mix of devotion, literary allusion and quiet landscape.
